PRP@CERIC ERIC – Pathogen Readiness Platform for CERIC-ERIC Upgrade

SECTOR:
PROJECT: Nazionale
PROGRAM: National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP)

The project “Pathogen Readiness Platform for CERIC-ERIC Upgrade” (PRP@CERIC) aims to strengthen the CERIC-ERIC Research Infrastructure through the implementation of a geographically distributed and scientifically integrated digital ecosystem, offering academic, industrial and public health interconnected expertise and tools to address emerging human, animal and plant pathogens of potential impact on health, safety and the economy.

The Research Infrastructures (RIs) of the of physical sciences and engineering field (PSE) are called to play a key role in understanding the fundamental aspects of pathogenicity and in contributing to the effective development of prevention and treatment strategies. State-of-the-art tools and technologies at different and mutually integrated scales (from single molecules to whole organisms) and different spatial domains (from static frames to system dynamics) have the potential to meet the sensitivity and selectivity requirements set forth by the study of intrinsically complex biological systems, to shed new light on host-pathogen interaction mechanisms.

The project entails both the development of new structures and the upgrade of tools and services in existing structures, interconnected in a network of interoperable thematic platforms and macro-platforms, based on complementary disciplines such as biology, biochemistry, chemistry, structural biology, physics, bioelectronics, omics sciences, medicinal chemistry, data science. This approach will support fundamental and applied research in infectious diseases and life sciences, including through the development of strategies dedicated to the treatment and study of samples, integrated in a process compatible with the DNSH principle (Do No Significant Harm, i.e. without causing any significant damage to the environment).

PRP@CERIC project also complies with the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data guidelines, whereby data will be processed in such a way as to be easily identifiable, accessible, interoperable and reusable, in the perspective of an open and collaborative science at an international level.

Sustainability will also extend to the educational model, since the project envisages the realization of postgraduate degrees to train the future EU generation of researchers, and users of research infrastructures.
