Area Science Park at Esof 2020

ESOF2020, the EuroScience Open Forum held in Trieste on 2-6 September, starts today. This Forum is one of the most important occasions of multidisciplinary encounter at a European level, dedicated to the progress in the fields of science and technology and to their role in society. The Forum has a rich agenda of meetings, plus several satellite events and the Science in the City Festival, which includes exhibitions, shows, laboratories and science cafés, not only in Trieste but also throughout the region of Friuli Venezia Giulia.

Area Science Park – a science and cultural partner of the conference – participates in different ways, both as a research agency and through the entities that are located in the science and technology park.
The many program initiatives include “A dialogue on sustainability focusing on research, ethics and the future”, a hybrid (material and digital) meeting scheduled on September 5, 6 pm, focusing on sustainability, research and ethics, the levers on which the future of our planet should be built.
Joanne Fox-Przeworski, member of the Board of Directors, Environmental Integrity Project, Washington DC, and Former Chair of Green Seal, and Sergio Paoletti, President of Area Science Park, will participate in the meeting. Moreover, well-known American economist Jeffrey Sachs will also give his contribution.

In the course of the event, much time will be dedicated to “The Trieste Declaration of Human Duties”, a code of ethics and principles on the protection of human dignity and the environment and on the preservation of peace among peoples. The Charter stems from an idea of Professor Roger Sperry; later, it was supported by Nobel Prize-Winner Rita Levi Montalcini and presented by her in 1991 exactly in Trieste, when she received an honorary degree by the local University. A few years later, it was promulgated by the International Council of Human Duties (ICHD ) and the University of Trieste, and signed by dozens of eminent members of Academies, including 15 Nobel Prize winners.

Area Science Park will also be present in the (real and virtual) space arranged by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, dedicated to the activities of a new industrial System (Argo), which was originated by an understanding by the Ministry of Education, University and Research and the Ministry of Economic Development, with the aim of strengthening the productivity of the territory, and of the SiS – Science and Innovation System of Friuli Venezia Giulia.

Finally, satellite events also include the European Conference of Science Journalism, with the participation of scientific journalists, held at Area Science Park’s convention center on September 1-2.
