JAVA BIOCOLLOID EUROPE LANDS IN THE PORT OF TRIESTE

Java Biocolloid Europe (Italy), a branch of Java Biocolloid, an Indonesian leading manufacturer of agar-agar – a polysaccharide derived from certain types of red algae used for food and pharmaceutical applications and in the microbiological industry – has chosen Trieste as a place in which to develop its manufacturing business.

The company was founded in 2009 through a partnership with the Hakiki Group – an Indonesian food production and distribution giant – and already operates in the Asian market. The new facility in Trieste will allow the company to meet the growing demand from enterprises in the Western world and to invest more in innovation and research, taking advantage of the position and the long R&D tradition of the city.

Java Biocolloid Europe is the first settlement in the port of Trieste in the framework of FREEWAY, the industrial hub stemming from a public-private partnership between AREA Science Park and SAMER &Co Shipping S.p.A. that aims to attract new manufacturing companies to locate in Trieste, thus fostering the attractiveness and the economic growth of the local area.

“We have chosen Trieste for many reasons” commented Lino Paravano, a founding partner of the Java Biocolloid group, while visiting Trieste for two days together with an Asian delegation. “Firstly, its geographical location, which is strategic to easily reach all of Europe. Secondly, the Free Port, which is going to facilitate the distribution of our products to Europe and the US. And last but not least, the presence of a world-renowned science and technology pole, which will greatly help us develop new products with quality standards that, without any doubt, will be very high.” In particular, in its Trieste facility, Java Biocolloid Europe will focus on the development of bacteriological agar-agar, benefiting from the expertise and the technological equipment provided by AREA Science Park.

“Last March, when we introduced the FREEWAY hub, we set a clear goal: having at least a company to settle in the port of Trieste before the end of the year” said Sergio Paoletti, President of AREA Science Park. “Today, we are very proud to announce we have achieved our goal. In addition, we set some criteria: we wanted the new manufacturing businesses to have a vocation for the international market and innovation. Indeed, Java Biocolloid Europe meets all the criteria we set. It is an international group currently investing in biotechnologies, sustainable development and green chemicals, all sectors we deem strategic. Thanks to the support of skilled research, high technology and innovation, they will have tangible positive effects on the local area.”

“The two main local sources of income meet in the FREEWAY Trieste project. Port logistics and scientific research have yielded a joint result in attracting the first foreign industrial establishment of the new era of the Port of Trieste” said Enrico Samer, President and CEO of Samer & Co Shipping S.p.A. “Thanks to the intense work of the Port Network Authority of the Eastern Adriatic Sea and AREA Science Park, strongly supported by our Regional Government, this actually translates into reality something that was just a plan only one year ago. In the short term, establishments of this type are bound to multiply.”

“This is an important result of a public-private partnership. We are finally seeing the first companies settling here thanks to the Free Port, but above all we are witnessing the results of the cooperation between sectors such as research bodies, the port and logistics operators” commented Zeno D’Agostino, President of the Port Network Authority of the Eastern Adriatic Sea.

Java Biocolloid Europe

The company Java Biocolloid Europe (Italy) is an operating branch of Java Biocolloid, an Indonesian leading manufacturer of agar-agar headquartered in Surabaya (EastJava), established in 2009 and belonging to the Hakiki Group, an Indonesian food production and distribution giant. Today, Java Biocolloid can boast one of the most advanced seaweed extracts manufacturing facilities in the world.

Agar, also known as agar-agar, is a polysaccharide derived from certain types of red algae used as a thickener for many types of food, acting as a gelling and suspending agent or stabiliser.

Agar is also widely used for pharmaceutical applications and in the microbiological industry, where it is used as a nutrient and gelling agent in the production of culture media used in bacteriological diagnosis procedures.
