1. Our Policy
Area Science Park has prepared this policy to protect the privacy of users of the website www.areasciencepark.it, permitting them to make an informed choice on use of the cookies installed on their terminals (computer, tablet, smartphone, notebook, IoT device) when browsing, and in order to comply with the provisions of article 13 of Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (“General Data Protection Regulation”) and the general Measures of the Privacy Authority of 8 May 2014 no. 229 (“Identification of the simplified mechanisms for the policy statement and consent for use of the cookies”) and no. 231 of 10 June 2021 (“Guidelines on the use of cookies and other tracking tools”). 2. Cookies explained
Cookies are small text strings (letters and/or numbers) that the websites visited send to the user’s terminal and that allow information to be stored in the browser to be reused during the current visit (session cookies) or on subsequent visits, even after a period of time (persistent cookies).
Cookies cannot retrieve any other data from the user’s hard disk, nor can they transmit computer viruses, or acquire email addresses or damage the terminal in any way or allow its activities to be controlled.
Similar functions may be performed by other tools that, while using different technology (known as ‘passive’ identifiers), enable processing similar to that carried out by means of cookies. ‘Passive’ tools include fingerprinting, i.e. the technique of identifying the device used by the user through collecting all or some of the information relating to the specific configuration of the device adopted by the data subject.
3. What cookies do
Cookies, which are usually present on the browsers of users in very large numbers, and which sometimes persist for very long times, are used for different purposes, and have been classified into two macro-categories by the Privacy Authority precisely in relation to the purposes of those who use them:
- technical cookies: are the cookies used for the sole purpose of sending a communication over an electronic communications network, or to the extent strictly necessary for a company service provider for the information explicitly requested by a subscriber or a user for the provision of said service, and therefore necessary for browsing or providing a service requested by the user. They are not used for other purposes, and are generally installed directly by the website operator. Technical cookies can be divided into: – browser or session cookies, that guarantee normal browsing and use of the website. These cookies are essential in that they allow the user to move from one section of the website to another and to use the services provided by the site such as browsing as a registered user or accessing secure areas, which would not otherwise be available;- analytics (or performance) cookies, which are similar to technical cookies where they are used directly by the website operator to collect information on the number of users and how they visit the site or on the possible presence of error messages sent by the website during the browsing session. These cookies do not collect information that can identify visitors. The information is collected on an aggregate, anonymous basis and is exclusively used to improve the website; – preference cookies, which allow users to browse in accordance with a set of certain criteria (for example language) in order to improve the service provided and to customise the offer available to the user to optimise the browsing experience. Information is generally collected anonymously and does not include browsing on other websites.
The use of technical cookies does not require the user’s prior and informed consent. The legal basis for the processing lies in the performance of tasks of public interest or connected to the exercise of public authority vested in Area Science Park, and in the legitimate interest of the data controller to ensure the smooth operation of the website and guarantee safe browsing;
- profiling cookies where it is necessary to obtain the user’s prior and informed consent: these are cookies used to create profiles of the user and modulate the provision of the service in an increasingly customised way beyond what is strictly necessary for the provision of the service, and to send targeted advertising messages that are in line with the preferences expressed by the user when browsing the internet.
In view of the specific invasiveness that said cookies may have in the private sphere of the users, European legislation and the Italian Privacy Authority require users to be adequately informed about their use and that they express their valid consent to their use which will constitute the lawful basis for the processing. Consent can be given or revoked at any time by acting directly in the specific cookie area accessible from the icon at the bottom left of each page of the website.
Similarly, other passive identifiers can also be categorised according to different criteria, with, however, the main principal still being the purpose for which they are used: either ‘technical’ or ‘non-technical’ in nature.
4. Cookie retention periods
Some cookies (session cookies) are not stored persistently on the user’s computer: they are deleted when the browser is closed or when the logout command is executed and, therefore have a duration that is limited to the user’s visit. They are strictly limited to the transmission of session identifiers needed to permit the safe and efficient exploration of the website, without using other information techniques that could potentially prejudice the confidentiality of the users’ navigation.
Other cookies (persistent cookies) stay stored on the computer’s hard disk until they expire or are deleted by the user. This website uses the technical and profiling cookies listed in the “Area Science Park cookie table“. 10. How the cookies are used by Area Science Park
Area Science Park uses cookies in full compliance with European legislation and the General Provisions of the Privacy Authority that sanction the lawfulness of such technologies for certain legitimate purposes relating to technical storage for the time strictly necessary to send the communication or provide a specific service requested by users. 13. How personal data related to use of the cookies are processed
Users’ personal data are processed through the use of computer and online storage media by parties who have been authorised and instructed by Area Science Park. The data are stored in electronic archives in compliance with security measures designed to prevent data loss or any unlawful or incorrect use or unauthorised access.
14. Who are the intended users of the data communication
Communication to other third parties besides any possible data processors may occur if necessary for the purposes pursued through the use of the cookies, to parties (such as IT supply and assistance companies that guarantee the proper functioning of the website) engaged in the pursuit of the purposes described in the tables in paragraph 6. In any case, processing by third parties will be carried out fairly and in accordance with the applicable legal provisions.

16. Your rights
In your capacity as data subjects, you can enforce the following rights: access to the personal data, the rectification or erasure of the data, the limitation of the processing, objection to the processing, data portability (right applicable to data in electronic format only), withdrawal of consent in the cases in which its issue is required. In order to exercise those rights, you can send a request to the Data Protection Officer at the following address: rpd@areasciencepark.it, preferably using the form which can be found in the Privacy section of the website. Area Science Park is required to provide a response within one month from the request which can be extended to up to three months in the event of particularly complex requests.
17. Right to lodge a complaint with the supervisory authority
If you believe that the processing of your personal data through the website of Area Science Park breaches the provisions of Regulation (EU) 679/2016, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the Privacy Authority or have recourse to the appropriate legal options.
18. Amendments and updates to the Cookie Policy
This policy statement takes effect from 25.01.2023 and may be updated. Area Science Park may amend or simply update, in whole or in part, this Cookie Policy, also in view of amendments to the laws that govern this issue and protect the rights of the data subjects.
