Culture and creativity: new stimulus for multisectoral innovation

The role of culture and creativity in innovation processes and scientific research to develop and boost the competitiveness of businesses and territories.
Architecture and design, arts and crafts, visual and performing arts, publishing, cultural heritage and much more: the cultural and creative industries sector is made up of a varied mix of businesses, large and small, working in an array of different fields.

According to estimates by the European Commission, the cultural and creative industries generate 558 billion euro in value in Europe, which is about 5.3% of total European GDP, employing around 12 million people, equal to 7.5% of all employed people (more than the automotive sector).

These companies play a recognised role as enablers of innovation and development across a multitude of sectors (manufacturing, health & life sciences, construction, etc.) and have positive spillover effects on numerous processes, including urban regeneration, ecological transition, economic resilience and digitalisation.

On January 26th a workshop organized by Area Science Park, leading national and international figures, has discussed present and future policies, tools and opportunities to:
stimulate cross-sector technological innovation;
• promote cross-fertilisation processes between key economic sectors;
• strengthen collaboration between businesses and scientific research, while encouraging the generation of innovative start-ups and spin-offs.

Close attention has been paid to the forthcoming launch of EIT Cultural & Creative: the new “innovation community” funded by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). It joins eight existing communities and its mission is to use culture and creativity to generate new jobs, foster sustainable growth and create spillover effects in different sectors.

The event has been organised by Area Science Park as part of the activities of the Cluster Regionale Cultura e Creatività. The Cluster was set up on the initiative of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Regional Council as a public-private partnership to facilitate the economic, cultural and social development of the region’s cultural and creative industries. The Cluster is open to businesses, associations, professionals, public and private institutions, cooperatives, research centres, knowledge hubs, and universities, which drive this important production chain in Friuli Venezia Giulia.
