Opening of Java Biocolloid Europe’s headquarters in the distripark of Trieste

The headquarters of Java Biocolloid Europe (Italy) will be based in Trieste and will cover 1800 sqm with three labs, two warehouses, legal and administrative offices. The company is a branch of Java Biocolloid, an Indonesian leading business in the production of Agar Agar, a polysaccharide obtained from red algae largely used in the food industry and the pharmaceutical sector, as well as a key component in microbiological analyses.

Established in 2009 as part of the Hakiki Group, an Indonesian food production and distribution colossus throughout Asia, the company has decided – in partnership with the Paravano family – to open a branch in the distripark of Trieste to fulfil increasing demand for Agar Agar from the West and to pursue innovation and research, thus fully exploiting the city’s potential.

Over 3 million euros have been invested in the buildings and technological infrastructures of Trieste’s headquarters, that will be used to produce and distribute food additives mainly obtained from seaweed to serve the food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. By 2020, the company will employ about thirty people including researchers, qualified technicians, production and administrative staff.

The inauguration of the headquarters – to be fully operational by late October – was held in the presence of Mrs. Wirjanto Lisiani, co-founder of the Hakiki group, and her son who chaired the event celebrating a typical Javanese good luck ceremony. In Java, any happy event is not celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony but with the nasi kuning tumpang, spiced yellow rice prepared with curcuma. In this dish, the rice is given a cone-like shape to represent a volcano (Indonesia has the largest number of active volcanoes worldwide). According to the dualistic vision of Eastern cultures, volcanoes cause destruction but lay the basis for revival and prosperity with their fertile ashes. By tradition, the host should cut the tip of the cone and give it to the guest.

We are very happy with what has been done so far” stated Lino Paravano, co-founder of Java Biocolloid as “we fully believe in this project, which is also a return to the origins for my family and me. It is vital to leverage on the features of Friuli Venezia Giulia, its geographical position and above all its state-of-the-art research and innovation system to promote further growth”.

FREEWAY TRIESTE

Java Biocolloid Europe (Italy) is the first company that has settled in Freeway Trieste, the public-private industrial hub established through the collaboration between Area Science Park and SAMER &Co Shipping to bring new businesses to Trieste boosting local attractiveness and economic development. This initiative has been developed in the framework of the Argo system, the innovation-based industrial model that was jointly launched by the Ministry of Education, University and Research, the Ministry of Economic Development and the Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia.
Green chemistry is the future, a nearby future requiring increasing investments” stated Sergio Paoletti, President of Area Science Park “In some sectors, research is producing results in line with market and company needs, which is why emphasis should be put on collaboration between these two worlds, which sometimes have different times and languages. The new headquarters of Java Biocolloid Europe in Freeway Trieste clearly shows that a successful alliance in strategic sectors leads to positive impacts and results at a local level”.
Today is an important day for Trieste: the opening of this company shows the value of this city and its port. Today its privileged geographical position, its port provided with excellent infrastructures, its international dimension, its link with the main international markets and its sound scientific ecosystem can clearly be appreciated” stated Enrico Samer, Chairman and CEO of Samer&Co Shipping “Such opportunities concentrated in a small area will be exploited by all the companies that will settle in the distripark. The task of local companies, institutions and decision-makers is to support these benefits, promote them and work in team. Together, we need to encourage other companies to settle here as they can bring value, a positive image, an international role and above all employment to our area. Let us look at the future relying on the synergy between the port and research. This is the way Trieste will be even more attractive to international investors and operators”.

THE FUTURE OF FREEWAY TRIESTE

We are very happy with the opening of Java Biocolloid, the first company that has settled in the distripark of Freeway Trieste hub” stated Stefano Casaleggi, General Director of Area Science Park “This is the result of the work made with Samer Group in the framework of the Argo system. The Indonesian multinational is only the first one. We are already in contact with two more innovative companies that want to settle in Trieste’s hub. They both focus on circular economy, in particular they deal with the recycling of fiberglass from dismantled hulls and exhausted oils”.
